Getting Started…. Defining and understanding “Cycling”
By Rodney Miller
Behind Every TOAD is a Tadpole of sorts, a metamorphosis from riding a bicycle, to cycling.
I have some great friends in cycling, and odds are you are being encouraged or associating with a social network of people, who may be mentoring your development as a cyclist.
Cycling can be a demanding sport. How can something so challenging and demanding be so addictive? Not to be cliché’, but the more you put in, the more you get back… is probably the foundation of the sport.
As you get started in cycling, it soon becomes apparent, that there is a difference between riding a bike and cycling. Just as someone can jog, they may not fit the category of runner. So too is the sport of cycling. You don’t have to be fast to be a cyclist, but knowing some fundamentals can increase your ability and allow you to improve your skills.
Let’s start with some assumptions… You ride on a regular basis, or you are planning to and you have the some cycling equipment. The latter will be discussed in other sections of the website, so we’ll continue with basics of biking vs cycling as an activity below.
Cycling like Running is a performance based activity. Granted, your level of performance and goals will be unique; there are some basic fundamentals that a Cyclist should be able to master.
